East Texas formal garden

Dave Rolston’s office faced the challenge of integrating a swimming pool, spa and pergola with a large new Tudor-style house. The house looked into a rough hillside, which suggested the formal terraces–providing perfect drainage for drought-tolerant plants. We worked with the owners to choose an interesting collection of roses, shrubs, herbs and perennials.

The plantings thrived during one of the hottest summers on record. The native oakleaf hydrangeas hung tough, and the beautyberries and coralberries look as fresh as a spring morning. The owners (who planted dozens of flats of perennials themselves) are looking forward to filling in few remaining holes — once it cools off a bit!
